A note from Andrea Ryff, two-time World Pole Champion

This isn't your standard pole workshop weekend.

If you've been doing pole for a while, you've probably experienced this:

You can see the move. You know you're strong enough to attempt it. You've watched the videos. You've tried the drills.

But there's one problem.

You don't have someone there who knows how to safely spot you through it.

As I personally experienced… I WAS TOO SCARED! There were tricks I wanted so badly but I didn't have anyone with the right expertise to spot me. So I never got to learn them.

Some skills simply aren't appropriate to learn by repeatedly throwing yourself at them. They require someone who understands the movement, can identify what's going wrong, knows how to physically assist you and can help you build the strength, technique and confidence to progress safely.

That's the purpose of this weekend.

The concept

An elite gymnastics coaching clinic... for pole.

The concept comes from a simple observation:

As pole becomes increasingly dynamic and acrobatic, dancers are attempting skills that require increasingly sophisticated coaching. Yet access to specialist spotting and high-level skill coaching isn't always available.

The result?

Pole dancers can spend months attempting the same skill without understanding what is holding them back, or worse, attempting movements without appropriate spotting or preparation.

This weekend brings a different approach.

Rather than simply teaching you a finished trick or combination, we'll focus on how you actually develop the skill.

  1. Break it down
  2. Drill it
  3. Strengthen it
  4. Progress it
  5. Spot it
  6. Attempt it
  7. Refine it
From Andrea

Why I created this

I know this problem personally.

As an elite pole competitor, there were skills I desperately wanted to learn but didn't have access to someone who could safely spot and coach me through them.

My background before and alongside pole was in elite gymnastics coaching. I spent more than 11 years coaching gymnastics and trained extensively in spotting techniques and the progression of advanced skills.

But as we see in pole, in gymnastics there was a limitation. So many gymnasts around the country but only a handful of highly experienced coaches. And for many athletes, particularly those living in regional areas, those coaches simply weren't accessible. Even when you had access to great coaches, there were still limitations. Sometimes it was the facilities or equipment required to safely train a skill.

That's why gymnastics camps were so valuable. Some of the country's best coaches would come together in one place, giving athletes the opportunity to train and learn from coaches they wouldn't otherwise have access to.

I knew what a high-level coaching environment could look like. And I wanted to bring that same coaching-camp experience to pole.

Because you shouldn't have to choose between never attempting the skill and attempting it without the right support.

There is another option. Learn it properly. With coaches who can spot you safely.

What you'll experience

Focused coaching

This is a small-group, highly focused coaching experience designed to give you access to specialist coaches, advanced skill development and dedicated spotting support.

Across all specialist workshops and the dedicated spotting session, you'll have structured coaching across the weekend with highly specialised coaches who can take you to the next level.

The small-group format is intentional. The aim is to create enough space for individual attention, questions, corrections, drills, progressions, conditioning and supported attempts.

The goal is to give you something that's difficult to access in everyday pole training: time, space, specialist coaching and appropriate spotting to work on the skills that require more than simply watching a tutorial and trying them yourself.

Workshop one · With Mischka and with Natty

Skills, progressions & spotting

This is the technical session. One with Mischka and one with Natty.

You'll work on dynamic/acrobatic skills and movements that benefit from specialist coaching and hands-on spotting. Depending on the instructor and the skills being explored, this may include:

Natty Stephens performing a dynamic pole move on stage

Skill breakdowns

Understanding the mechanics and technical requirements of a movement.

Drills

Breaking the movement into manageable components so you can train the specific parts you need.

Progressions

Finding the appropriate step between where you are now and the skill you're working towards.

Conditioning & strengthening

Identifying the physical qualities required and training them specifically.

Technical corrections

Understanding what's preventing you from progressing and learning how to make adjustments.

Hands-on spotting

Working with an experienced coach to safely explore movements that may not be appropriate to attempt independently.

The goal isn't simply to tick a trick off your list. It's to leave with a better understanding of how to train it.

Workshop two · With Mischka and with Natty

Dynamic movement & sequences

The second session takes a different approach.

You'll explore more dynamic movement and sequencing with your instructor, giving you an opportunity to work with their individual style, movement quality and area of expertise. One with Mischka and one with Natty.

This session is about taking the skills you're developing and putting them into movement. You'll work through challenging combinations, dynamic transitions and opportunities to explore movement in a way that pushes your existing skill set.

Two days. Four coaches. One spotting rig.

Small groups, with dedicated hands-on coaching and spotting.

Specialist spotting rig

Two hours of dedicated spotting coaching

There will be one more element to the weekend that takes the coaching experience to another level.

We'll have a purpose-built spotting rig specifically for the camp, giving you the opportunity to work on advanced acrobatic skills that require a level of support and safety that simply isn't possible on a standard pole. This comes with Toby and Andrea's experience with gymnastics and acrobatics, combined with Toby's rigging expertise.

You'll have a dedicated 2-hour spotting workshop with Toby J and Andrea, focusing on skills including:

Back saltosFlipsDynamic acrobatic skillsAdvanced aerial movementsProgressions and drillsConditioning and preparationHands-on spotting techniques

The purpose isn't simply to throw you into a skill with a safety net. It's to understand how the skill works, what your body needs to do, how to progress towards it and how to safely attempt it.

The spotting rig allows us to create an environment where you can explore movements that you may not otherwise have access to training safely.

The format

Small groups. Dedicated coaching.

Small groups are a fundamental part of the experience.

Every group is kept small so the coaching environment allows for significantly more individual attention than a traditional large-format workshop, with dedicated hands-on coaching and spotting throughout.

This is focused coaching time.

You'll have the opportunity to:

  • Ask questions.
  • Receive technical feedback.
  • Work through progressions.
  • Repeat drills.
  • Explore your individual limitations.
  • Work with hands-on spotting where appropriate.
Who is this for?

Built for experienced pole dancers

This experience is designed for experienced pole dancers (Mid Intermediate to Elite) who want to develop more challenging skills.

Before you book

You should already have a strong foundation of pole technique and conditioning, training at a mid intermediate level as a minimum.

Min Skill Requirement:

You'll need to be able to do both inside and outside leghangs with ease, extended butterfly and brass monkey.

It's particularly suited to pole dancers who are:

  • Interested in dynamic or acrobatic movement
  • Training skills that require spotting
  • Looking for more structured progressions
  • Frustrated by skills they can't seem to unlock
  • Wanting to understand the strength and conditioning behind difficult skills
  • Looking for specialist coaching that isn't readily available where they live
  • Preparing for competition or wanting to expand their technical repertoire

Groups will be assigned based on your experience.

  1. Group 1Intermediate to entry level Advanced
  2. Group 2Advanced to Elite
  3. Group 3Elite/Professional
What makes this different?

A specialist coaching clinic

The difference is the coaching environment. The format is completely different to what you'll experience in a traditional workshop. This is built upon the framework of gymnastics coaching clinics.

  • Understand the skill.
  • Identify the requirements.
  • Break it down.
  • Drill the components.
  • Build the strength.
  • Work through progressions.
  • Get technical feedback.
  • Use appropriate spotting.
  • Attempt the skill.
  • Refine your technique.
The focus shifts from performing the skill to developing the skill. In a safe environment with someone who knows how to spot you.
The experience we want you to have

You may arrive with a skill you've been chasing. You may have tried every drill you've found online. You may have convinced yourself you're simply "not strong enough". Or you may be strong enough, but missing one technical piece.

Or, as I personally experienced… I WAS TOO SCARED! There were tricks I wanted so badly but I didn't have anyone with the right expertise to spot me. So I never got to learn them.

That's what we're here to explore. You don't need to arrive already knowing exactly what you need. Come with the skills you're curious about. The movements you're stuck on. The things you've been too nervous to attempt alone. The skills you want to understand. And the ones you've always wondered:

"Could I actually do that?"

Important

This is a specialist training experience designed for experienced pole dancers.

Participation in acrobatic skills carries inherent physical risk. Skills will be taught according to the group level and the instructor's professional judgement, with appropriate progressions, conditioning and spotting where applicable.

You will never be expected to attempt a skill that is inappropriate for your current level.

The objective isn't to force a trick. It's to give you the knowledge and coaching to train towards it safely.
